The idea of selling snoballs in oyster pails was the innovation of Sydney Williams, the original owner of Williams Plum Street Snoballs in the Carrollton neighborhood. The pails were water-proof and easily obtainable in a city serious about seafood consumption. Today they are more commonly known as Chinese take-out boxes and it was the usual way to serve snoballs in New Orleans for more than fifty years. Plum Street is the only place in New Orleans where you can still get a snoball served this way.
The Plum Street Snoball Pin celebrates the classic oyster pail snoball tradition that started in Carrollton in 1945.
